If you attended this year’s #NSCExpo, you may have noticed an emphasis on silica protection and compliance. During last Monday’s session, experts dove deep into the OSHA mandated regulations for silica exposure, and the challenges high risk industries face.
In particular, safety experts addressed how the construction industry is approaching compliance, versus those that fall within the general industry.
If you missed NSC, here’s some important info to know:
- Silica is about 100 times smaller than a grain of sand. When inhaled, it can scar the lungs and also pose danger to the kidneys and immune system.
- Silica exposure affects over 2 million construction workers, and 300,000 general industry and maritime workers.
- When left untreated, silica exposure can cause lung cancer, kidney failure and silicosis, an incurable and deadly disease.
Silica testing has not come without its challenges.
Employers have been faced with finding the appropriate medical resources to meet the demand of the silica standard – effective June 23, 2018, along with knowing how to manage a workforce that may test positive for a silica related disease but still allowed to work.
